Green Star's Idaho manufacturing plant nearing completion

Chula Vista, Calif.-based Green Star Products Inc. is nearing completion on a fabrication facility designed to build biodiesel plants in Glenns Ferry, Idaho. Green Star President Joe LaStella said the 90,000-square foot plant is less than two weeks from going online.

Once operational, the manufacturing facility will take approximately four months to build a biodiesel plant, according to LaStella. Green Star announced in early August it had funding commitments to build three biodiesel plants. The first plant will be shipped to North Carolina, Washington state or produce biodiesel at the Idaho site. Glenns Ferry is located in southwest Idaho along Interstate 84.

LaStella said the Idaho manufacturing facility is built on 7.8 acres equipped with 1,000 feet of rail spur, eight 16,500-bushel grain silos and bulk grain elevators.

Each Green Star-designed plant will have 10 MMgy to 20 MMgy of biodiesel production capacity. The plants will be shipped via rail or truck in 40-foot shipping containers, two of which are already on site, LaStella said.

Green Star announced in May it developed an "enclosed, waterless continuous flow biodiesel production" system. LaStella said the plants are "fully sustainable," meaning they only require on-site electricity and storage tanks to operate.

Green Star was previously an owner of American Biofuels LLC, a biodiesel plant in Bakersfield, Calif. The facility was expected to expand from 10 MMgy to 40 MMgy prior to a Feb. 17 fire. The fire was initiated by a methanol spill, which destroyed the entire plant.

After initial plans to rebuild an expanded facility at the Bakersfield site, Green Star announced plans in March to begin building biodiesel plants. LaStella said there is still a chance the company would consider rebuilding in Bakersfield. He said proper permits are already in hand.
