Opportunity drives us
By Tom Bryan | July 01, 2005
I don't think the biodiesel industry is exciting only because it is growing extremely fast, or only because it has celebrity support, or only because the President of the United States has vocalized his support for it, as he did May 16 at Virginia Biodiesel Refinery in New Kent, Va. (see "Presidential Presence" on page 34).

You bet I'm thrilled and honored by those things, but what really gets me energized is the sense of purpose and opportunity that biodiesel presents. This industry, along with the ethanol industry, is on the frontier of what I believe is a biofuels revolution. Being on the leading edge of a movement such as this gives regular people extraordinary opportunities to bring about change.

Opportunity drives us.

We work in an industry that thrives on innovation and is constantly striving for improved efficiency and product quality. We witness daily the achievements of American companies like South Dakota Soybean Processors (SDSP) in Volga, S.D., a farmer-owned soybean processor that manufactures oils and biobased products from soybeans, helping the nation reduce its dependence on petroleum-based products and fuels.

As detailed in our lead feature on page 24, "Pure and Simple," SDSP recently unveiled SoyPure, a refined soybean oil that the company says can help producers achieve greater throughput and lower manufacturing costs.

This industry lets us grow with amazing companies like Ag Processing Inc. (AGP), one of the biodiesel industry's first large-scale producers. A decade after its inception, AGP is now expanding production capacity in Sergeant Bluff, Iowa. In our page 30 feature on the cooperative, "An Industry Pioneer Expands," AGP Vice President of Government Relations and Industrial Products John Campbell says, "To start with an idea and end up with an industry, everything in between has to change." That statement captures the nature of the opportunity-driven industry we belong to.

And you and I, like the people hard at work at AGP, SDSP and the many other great cooperatives, companies and associations in this business, get to wake up each day and ask ourselves, "How can I help the biodiesel industry face the next big challenge, capture the next big opportunity, create the next big market opportunity?"
If you ask me, that's exciting stuff.
