Biodiesel availability increases across nation

Biodiesel pumps are spreading across the United States from Washington to Iowa and Texas as motorists continue to seek biodiesel blends.

On June 28, Seattle-based Propel Inc. opened its sixth Clean Fuel Point in the Emerald City, offering B5 and B20 to consumers. Construction of the facility began in April and took approximately eight weeks to complete. Rob Elam, founder and chief executive officer of Propel, said blended fuel options for customers are important in this day and age. "Propel offers something they've never had-true choice at the pump," he said. "With choice comes power."

In Inwood, Iowa, construction of biodiesel and ethanol pumps was scheduled to begin at Oak Street Station in late summer. Brent VanRegenmorter, managing partner of Oak Street Station, said he received an Iowa Renewable Fuel Infrastructure Grant that covers up to 70 percent of total expenses up to a maximum of $40,000. "We're going to put off-road and on-road diesel up front with biodiesel all year long in the off-road diesel and a 2 percent blend in the on-road in the summer only, just to see how that goes," he said. Because of cold winter temperatures in the area, he will also be monitoring gelling.

BioWillie-branded biodiesel will be available at Willie's Place in Carl's Corner, Texas, south of Dallas, in September. The truck stop is in the midst of renovation and will be reemerging as a state-of-the art facility following a fire two years ago that nearly destroyed it. By September, BioWillie biodiesel is expected to be available at 12 truck fueling bays. "Eight pumps will offer B20, and two pumps will offer B5," said Shawne Horn, director of corporate communications of Earth Biofuels Inc., which owns a minority interest in the truck stop. In addition to the fueling bays for trucks, there will be a conventional bay with eight B20 pumps.
