Biodiesel symposium tackles sustainability

By | January 01, 2009
A National Biodiesel Board symposium brought some of the nation's leading voices to St. Louis to highlight the role biofuels can play in finding sustainable solutions to energy and climate change challenges in the United States.

The symposium featured discussions of critical issues related to the promise of biofuels, including greenhouse gas emission models, biodiesel's positive energy balance and the development of next-generation feedstocks.

The NBB announced the formation of a Sustainability Task Force in February 2008 to help ensure that U.S. biodiesel production stays on a sustainable path. "As America searches for solutions to our energy challenges, U.S. biodiesel is delivering with a cleaner and sustainable renewable fuel source," said Emily Bockian Landsburg, chair of the NBB's Sustainability Task Force. "Biodiesel is already helping the nation make important strides toward energy independence and we will continue to explore new and promising practices."

The sustainability symposium included representatives from the USDA, the National Renewable Energy Laboratory, the American Soybean Association, the World Initiative for Soy in Human Health and the U.S. DOE Clean Cities program.

During the same week, the NBB adopted several resolutions addressing sustainability. The resolutions pledge to continue to develop internal policies and support practices that promote the use of sustainable feedstocks and biodiesel production methods, and to actively engage in forums addressing global sustainability standards.

Countering unsound and incomplete science which distorts the effects of biofuels, NBB is committed to providing accurate information about biodiesel to educate the public, elected leaders and the media. NBB has launched a new web site, www.biodieselsustainability.com, that provides information on biodiesel and feedstocks, environmental benefits of biodiesel, the food and fuel discussion and many other topics.
