National Biodiesel Conference and Expo sets the bar as a not-to-miss event
March 9, 2009
The National Biodiesel Conference and Expo, held Feb. 1-4 in San Francisco, featured big-name advocates of biodiesel, announcements on biodiesel's support from the scientific community, and automakers' diesel offerings. The conference, themed "Leading. Change. Now," offered educational and networking opportunities. Educational sessions focused on sustainability, fuel production, technical updates, fuel distribution, policy/regulations and markets and users.
Vehicles Helping to Drive Biodiesel A major component of NBB's conference showcased automakers' diesel vehicle offerings and biodiesel support. Volkswagen announced that B5 will be the official fuel of the 2009 Volkswagen Jetta TDI Racing Series. Hyperfuels, a national supplier of race fuels, biodiesel, additives and lubricants, has been selected as the official fuel sponsor. Hyperfuels' parent company, Gulf Hydrocarbon, is an NBB member.
Other vehicles in the 2009 biodiesel vehicle showcase included Chrysler's Dodge Ram pickup truck, which is approved for up to B20 for fleet use; Hayes Diversified Technologies' diesel-powered motorcycles, including a land-speed record-setting production diesel motorcycle; Solazyme's factory-standard Jeep Liberty operating on 100 percent algae-derived biodiesel; and Jay Leno's Ecojet presented by New Holland.
Highest Biodiesel Honors Awarded Advocates for environmentally friendly biodiesel recognized as National Biodiesel Board's 2009 "Eye on Biodiesel Award" winners include:
Influence-Melissa Etheridge Etheridge often powers her worldwide tours with biodiesel and said she liked using biodiesel in her tour vehicles so much that she sold her personal cars to buy a diesel sport utility vehicle, which she calls the Bio-Beast.
Inspiration-Bryan Peterson and Pete Bethune Peterson made his way around the world in a biodiesel-powered boat, generating some of the earliest news on biodiesel. New Zealander Bethune's Earthrace boat, fueled by biodiesel, broke the speed record for circumnavigating the world.
Initiative-San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom In 2006, Newsom called for more biodiesel use in San Francisco. Today, virtually all of the city's 1,500 diesel vehicles run on B20.
Industry Partnership-Ronald Hayes, Missouri and Randy Jennings, Tennessee Hayes and Jennings worked in conjunction with state and national regulatory agencies to create and enforce standards for biodiesel fuel. They also helped develop test methods and labeling requirements.
Impact-Randall von Wedel Von Wedel helped bring biodiesel to the West Coast. Since the early 90s, he opened California's first retail pump, implemented biodiesel in major fleets, introduced fleet quality control programs and helped pioneer biodiesel marine uses.
Pioneer Award-Kenlon Johannes Johannes was the first executive director of the National SoyDiesel Development Board, which became the NBB.
The 2010 National Biodiesel Conference & Expo will take place Feb. 7-10 in Grapevine, Texas.

Capturing and storing carbon dioxide in underground wells has the potential to become the most consequential technological deployment in the history of the broader biofuels industry. Deploying effective carbon capture and storage at biofuels plants will cement ethanol and biodiesel as the lowest carbon liquid fuels commercially available in the marketplace. The Carbon Capture & Storage Summit will offer attendees a comprehensive look at the economics of carbon capture and storage, the infrastructure required to make it possible and the financial and marketplace impacts to participating producers.View More
The Sustainable Fuels Summit: SAF, Renewable Diesel, and Biodiesel is a premier forum designed for producers of biodiesel, renewable diesel, and sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) to learn about cutting-edge process technologies, innovative techniques, and equipment to optimize existing production. Attendees will discover efficiencies that save money while increasing throughput and fuel quality. Produced by Biodiesel Magazine and SAF Magazine, this world-class event features premium content from technology providers, equipment vendors, consultants, engineers, and producers to advance discussions and foster an environment of collaboration and networking. Through engaging presentations, fruitful discussions, and compelling exhibitions, the summit aims to push the biomass-based diesel sector beyond its current limitations.
Co-located with the International Fuel Ethanol Workshop & Expo, the Sustainable Fuels Summit conveniently harnesses the full potential of the integrated biofuels industries while providing a laser-like focus on processing methods that deliver tangible advantages to producers. Registration is free of charge for all employees of current biodiesel, renewable diesel, and SAF production facilities, from operators and maintenance personnel to board members and executives.View More
