American Ag Fuels LLC under construction in Ohio

By | December 01, 2004
Construction has commenced and remains on schedule for what could become central Ohio's first biodiesel manufacturing facility. American Ag Fuels LLC is building a 2-mmgy multi-feedstock biodiesel plant in Defiance, Ohio, midway between Toledo, Ohio, and Ft. Wayne, Ind.
American Ag Fuels CEO Steve Lankenau told Biodiesel Magazine that the plant is expected to begin production in May 2005. Superior Process Technologies LLC of Minneapolis is working with the project. The company is a plant engineering and design group specializing in the production of biodiesel methyl esters.

Lankenau said a study done by the Ohio Soybean Council indicated the positive feasibility of a biodiesel production facility in two areas in Ohio, one being Defiance. He said transportation access and the use of an existing building solidified the location.
American Ag Fuels received a $500,000 USDA grant to help equip the plant. Lankenau said the UDSA granted the funding partially because of the multi-feedstock capability of the plant. Virgin soybean oil will be the plant's primary feedstock, but it is also capable of using yellow grease and tallow.

Lankenau said the plant capacity could be expanded to 10 mmgy. Before considering that, the focus will be on meeting ASTM standards and BQ9000 accreditation.

American Ag Fuels looks to market the biodiesel within a 150-mile radius of the plant. According to research conducted for the 2004 American Society of Agricultural Engineers/Canadian Society for Engineering in Agricultural, Food and Biological Systems Annual International Meeting, almost 565,000 gallons of blended biodiesel were used in Ohio in 2003. There also appears to be a solid market across the border in Indiana. Belinda Puetz, communications director for the Indiana Soybean Board, said the state used about 350,000 gallons of B100 in the past 12 months.
