Greenleaf Biofuels LLC held a groundbreaking ceremony for its 10 MMgy biodiesel plant in New Haven, Conn., on Nov. 4. The event took place adjacent to the cleared building lot with New Haven Terminal’s waterfront petroleum terminal. The event was attended by key financial partners, government officials and contractors.

Gus Kellogg, Greenleaf’s president and CEO, said the groundbreaking is something his company has looked forward to for some time. “The event was about acknowledging the key partners we’ve had on the project,” he said. Those recognized at the ceremony included key financial partners led by Sovereign Bank, including the Connecticut Community Investment Corp., the Department of Economic and Community Development, Advantage Capital Partners and Enhanced Capital Partners. Engineering firms Innovative Design Engineering Associates and Jatrodiesel were also highlighted, as was the builder, Munger Construction Co.

Greenleaf has been distributing biodiesel for several years, with the aim of eventually establishing a production facility. The company began to develop this project five years ago. Once complete, the facility will feature a Greenline Industries system that was purchased at auction. That system will be redesigned and upgraded to include additional methanol recovery, distillation systems and cold filtering.

According to Kellogg, excavation and concrete work is being done on the site right now. The building will be erected in October he said. Kellogg previously told Biodiesel Magazine that the plant could be operational by the second quarter of 2012.

“After many years of planning, we are delighted to begin construction of this regionally significant clean energy project,” Kellogg said. “We expect to create 20 fulltime jobs initially at our Port of New Haven location and will add more as we expand in the future. In addition, we will be creating many temporary construction jobs over the next nine to 12 months.”
