In the U.S. District Court of Maryland this week, the jury trial of Clean Green Fuel LLC owner Rodney Hailey, charged with carrying out a $9 million scam that involved the distribution of 32.2 million invalid renewable identification numbers (RINs), is underway. The Honorable Judge William D. Quarles is presiding.
Hailey’s company was the first identified and charged by the federal government for fraudulently producing biodiesel RINs, credits that oil companies and fuel importers buy to satisfy their obligations under the renewable fuel standard. Next charged was Texas-based Absolute Fuels LLC followed by Houston-based Green Diesel LLC. After the late May raid on Cima Green and subsequent subpoenas issued seeking information, all relating back to Indiana-based eBiofuels, it is suspected that a fourth case is currently being built.
