Energy Independence Day: new biodiesel terminal opens in Portland
July 5 will be the grand opening date of the new Beaver Biodiesel/Whole Energy biodiesel terminal in Portland, Ore., at 2505 NW 28th Ave. Beaver Biodiesel Principal Daniel Shafer said the timing can be viewed as Energy Independence Day. “We’re proud to have partnered with one of the largest and most innovative companies in the western U.S. in Bellingham, Wash.-based Whole Energy Fuels Corp.,” Shafer said. “The relationship will allow us to grow our operation in the greater Portland area, and allow us to serve the community in a variety of ways.”

Beaver Biodiesel is also supporting the Cascade Pacific Council of the Sea Scouts, a program serving children and young adults ages 14 to 21 who are interested in a maritime industry career, by donating marine-grade biodiesel for its 12 vessels in the greater Portland area.
The program helps provide leadership and skills training in the areas of navigation, seamanship, operation and maintenance of propulsion and electronic systems, chart reading and celestial navigation.
“Our program offers young men and women the opportunity to develop the skills necessary to pursue real career opportunities as merchant marines, in the travel and tourism industries (cruise ships and river boats), in sea faring commerce (tug and barge operation) and in the military,” said Commodore Dennis Moore. “The support of Beaver Biodiesel is vital to the continuation of our programs, in that fuel costs are one of our greatest ongoing expenses. By investing in young people, we invest in our future. A partnership with forward-thinking companies like Beaver Biodiesel and Whole Energy is so appropriate, and it gives our Sea Scouts insight into another vital and growing sector in the maritime profession; sustainable maritime fuel production.”
