.“Don't go all gay on me.”Wind whipped the loose cloth liner of the Packard's roof. Clouds reltfceed on the round, powder blue hood broken by the silver stripe down the middle. Dion gave way to Little Anthony and the Imperials Tears on My Pillow. Doug watched the even rows in the fields topped by creamy blue sky stretching forever. John sniffled dry, warm air.A siren wailed behind them. John glimpsed the rear view mirror, but Doug slumped and checked the side mirror before he looked at John, eyes worried, mouth agape. John checked the speedometer, and they hung there a moment before John hit the clutch and the brake to take the car out of gear and roll onto the gravel. A red light flash over them, left, returned, left.“S***,” Doug said, “I got warrants.”They stared forward as the rear car's engine died, a door slammed, then John watched knee-high boots with a military shine scrape over the road in a gait that looked like the officer easily killed cockroaches with each step. The beefy, red face leaned in the window.“Good afternoon, sir. You got license and registration?”Both stared forward, but in the silence, Doug turned to watch John's jaw work, and his brows hardened even more in a hood over his deep eyes.“I think ” John drew and released a sigh, “I think for your safety, you probably want to let this go.”Boots scraped the ground as the officer leaned more into the window.“How's that now?”John broke into a toothy grin, then he turned to face the officer. “I said people who j*** off too much go deaf.”The officer stepped back into the road and covered his revolver in the holster. “Step out here, son.”John threw the door open, slid his legs around as his white shirt strained against a broad, rounded back before he stood, the car rising. John stared at the officer.“Do you have a wife and kids?”“Don't worry about that.”“Do you have pictures?”“I didn't – listen, son ”John lunged with a hand in the officer's face as the officer raised both hands; John snagged the gun with the other hand as he hooked his leg behind the officer's knees; on the ground, the officer rolled onto his stomach just as John dropped his knees on the officer's elbows, the tan cap fell off bottom up, then John pointed the barrel into shiny black hair before a loud pop sent a splatter of blood onto the asphalt and John's face. His eyes burned and squinted as acrid gunpowder, discharged in smoke, battled the blood's copper smell. Something hung in the air … deep peace … as birds sang in the distance, and a wind whipped over the cooled blood and sweat on his forehead. He felt like he did in the war: sharp, clear, calm, like a predator.“Oh, Jesus!” Doug screamed. The door slammed behind John, as he made red streaks across his forearm from his face, then he shoved on his knees to roll onto the balls of his feet and stand. Doug dashed into view and stared with horror at what John admired with deep beauty: the body, totally lacking life in a way only the living can know with some lack of static electric spark, totally still, snared in death's surprise, his brown eye next to his head in a splash of blood and clots of brain.“Oh, s*** John, we're f***ing dead!”Years of honed skill twitched the arm up and put the bullet in Doug's opened mouth as he stood in place and jerked his hands up to the back of his neck. Blood dribbled out over his lips as he struggled to make words, their e
