BioDiesel Reactor Technologies Inc. recently announced that U.S. Patent No. 8,366,794 entitled “Apparatus and Method for Biofuel Production” has been issued. The patent covers the commercial application of BDR’s ceramic membrane reactor technology for the production of biodiesel and fatty acid acyl esters (FAAE). The patent includes 22 claims and was granted with a 1,081-day patent term extension.
“The U.S. patent extends intellectual property protection for BDR’s membrane reactor technology into the world’s second-largest biodiesel market,” said Ken Lawless, CEO of BDR Technologies. “We believe our technology will play a critical role in ensuring that biodiesel producers meet and exceed new stringent fuel quality standards and at the same time improve their profitability by reducing feedstock pretreatment requirements, improving yields and lowering operating costs.”

BDR’s technology is compatible with existing conventional plant technologies and can be used for new plants or to retrofit existing plants to make them compliant with new quality standards and to improve profitability. The technology can be used for virgin oils, high free fatty acid containing feedstock such as used cooking oils, yellow grease, waste corn oil and jatropha, as well as next-generation feedstocks (algae oils) into biodiesel. The company’s technology also has application in the Omega-3 supplements industry.
The inventors on the patent are Andre Tremblay and Marc Dube of the University of Ottawa, which has granted to BDR an exclusive worldwide license to the technology. Patents relating to this technology have already issued in Singapore, Malaysia and China and are pending in South America, the EU, Canada and other parts of Asia.
