Scotland proposes 10-fold increase in biodiesel use

The government of Scotland plans to increase the use of biofuels, including biodiesel, for transport from less than 1 percent to 10 percent by 2020 to contribute towards reducing emissions by 80 percent by 2050.READ MORE

The United Kingdom's Renewable Fuels Agency, an independent sustainable fuels regulator, released its first quarterly report Oct. 7, which stated that biofuels accounted for 2.61 percent of road fuel in the U.K. during the quarter, exceeding the 2.5 percent goal. Whittington becomes trucking group chairman

The new chairman for the American Trucking Associations, Charles "Shorty" Whittington, is also president of the 5 MMgy Integrity Biofuels biodiesel plant in Morristown, Ind. Algae producer Sunrise to receive R&D grant

Sunrise Ridge Algae Inc. of Houston has been awarded $250,000 from the Texas Emerging Technology Fund to continue the research and development as well as the commercialization of its wastewater algae production technology to produce feedstock for biodiesel and other applications.READ MORE

Alterra Bioenergy to produce bio-additive

Macon, Ga.-based biodiesel producer Alterra Bioenergy has introduced its new bio-additive product line, Alterra DieselMaxx, in conjunction with its biodiesel production and sales operations. Dynamic Fuels LLC, a joint venture formed between Tyson Foods and Syntroleum Corp., held a groundbreaking ceremony Oct. 6 for its 75 MMgy renewable synthetic fuel production facility in Geismar, La. The new facility will utilize Syntroleum's patent pending Bio-Refining Technology.READ MORE

WASDE: More harvested soybean acres boost supply

The Oct. 10 USDA World Agricultural Supply and Demand Estimates report projected U.S. oilseed ending stocks for 2008-'09 would be significantly higher, up 2.6 million tons from last month, to 7.4 million tons. Soybean production is forecast at 2.98 billion bushels, up 49 million from last month.READ MORE

ASTM publishes new biodiesel standards

More widespread usage of biodiesel took a step forward Oct. 13 when the ASTM International published new standards for stronger biodiesel blends. The approved biodiesel blend specifications include requirements for up to five percent biodiesel for use in on- and off-road diesel, as well as home heating and boiler applications.READ MORE
