Ohio-based Cognis Corp. has partnered with biodiesel laboratory solution provider Biodiesel Analytical Solutions, which will sell and support Cognis' QTA System, a biodiesel quality and process control technology. The Cognis QTA analyzes a biodiesel sample using infrared technology.READ MORE

USDA helps establish Guatemalan biodiesel plants

The Norman Borlaug Institute for International Agriculture at Texas A&M University has helped to establish a cooperative biodiesel plant in Masagua, Guatemala, that will use jatropha oil as its feedstock. Global Earth Energy to build plant in North Carolina

Buffalo, N.Y.-based Global Earth Energy Inc. signed a letter of intent in mid-December with American Distillation Inc. to build a 5 MMgy biodiesel plant alongside the chemical company's plant in Leland, N.C. Global Earth Energy will rent the land, build the biodiesel facility and sell the fuel; American Distillation will operate the plant.READ MORE

Mid-Atlantic Biodiesel plant auction set for Jan. 22

Maas Companies Inc., a firm specializing in investment recovery, is scheduled to auction off Mid-Atlantic Biodiesel's 5 MMgy plant in Clayton, Del., on Jan. 22, starting at 11 a.m. Built in 2006-2007, the plant operated for six months before production was suspended due to high feedstock costs and unfavorable market conditions.READ MORE

Connecticut awards $3.1 million in biodiesel grants

Connecticut Gov. M. Jodi Rell recently announced the state has awarded more than $3 million in grants to support biodiesel projects. More than $900,000 will be awarded to three Connecticut-based universities to conduct biofuel quality testing and study different production methods and feedstocks. In addition, a total of $2.2 million in grants will be awarded to four biodiesel production facilities, which will be used to leverage more than $6 million in private investment.READ MORE

JAL flight to test camelina-jatropha-algae fuel

Japan Airlines will use camelina, jatropha and algae oil for a demonstration biofuel jet flight in Japan on Jan. 30. The one-hour demo flight will use a fuel comprised of 50 percent Jet-A (kerosene) fuel and 50 percent biofuel. The biofuel will be a mixture produced using camelina, jatropha and algae.READ MORE

Alberta to enact renewable fuel standard

Alberta, Canada's Provincial Energy Strategy was announced Dec. 11. The strategy, a long-term energy action plan that includes adopting a renewable fuel standard, would require the inclusion of 2 percent renewable fuel in diesel and 5 percent ethanol in gasoline. The standard is scheduled to take effect in 2010.READ MORE

WASDE: Soybean exports up, crush down

Strong early season exports, mostly to China, prompted the USDA to raise its estimated soybean exports by 30 million bushels to 1.05 billion bushels in its monthly World Agricultural Supply and Demand Estimates report released Dec. 11. The soybean crush estimate was reduced by 30 million bushels to 1.72 billion, reflecting weak domestic soybean meal consumption and lower soybean meal export prospects, especially to Canada.READ MORE
