Hearings set for oil speculation restrictions

Complaints about "strange behavior" and market volatility have led the Commodities Futures and Trading Commission to hold hearings on oil speculation during July and August. The CFTC currently sets and ensures adherence to position limits with respect to certain agriculture products. This is not the case for energy markets. "For energy commodities, futures exchanges set position limits and accountability levels to protect against manipulation and congestion, but individual exchanges are not required to set and enforce position limits as a preventative measure against excessive speculation," the commission said in an official release.READ MORE

WASDE: soy supplies up, biodiesel use down

USDA projected the U.S.soybean supplies higher and prices slightly down in its July 10 World Agricultural Supply and Demand Estimates report. Global oilseed production was projected to hit a record for 2009-'2010. USDA dropped its projections for soybean oil used for methyl esters in the U.S. to 2,000 million pounds compared to 2,200 million pounds projected in the previous month's report. That compares with USDA's estimates of 1,650 million pounds used for biodiesel in the 2008-'09 marketing year and 2,345 million pounds in 2007-'08.READ MORE Fuel Ethanol Workshop

Exxon announces $600 million algae project

ExxonMobil Corp. is making the largest investment to date in algae biofuel research and development with a $600 million commitment over the next five to six years. Emil Jacobs, vice president of research and development at ExxonMobil, said in a news conference following the announcement July 14 if the research proceeds as expected there will be continued investments in the billions of dollars to commercialize algae as an alternative energy feedstock. The major oil company will be devoting half that investment to internal efforts, with potentially more than $300 million going to the privately held California research firm Synthetic Genomics Inc.READ MORE

EU confirms biodiesel duties on US product

A majority of member states in the European Commission affirmed provisional countervailing duties on July 7 that were initially imposed in March on U.S. biodiesel imports into the European Union, effectively shutting down biodiesel shipments. The action was expected and will extend the duties for five years. "This is an unfortunate decision," Manning Feraci, vice president of federal affairs for the National Biodiesel Board, said.READ MORE

Paratherm launches new transfer liquid

Biodiesel producers often use heat transfer technologies in glycerin recovery, distillation and purification applications, as well as in the transesterification reactors, so new products like Paratherm Corp.'s high-temperature heat transfer fluid could be a staple for this evolving industry. "Biodiesel plants are going to be using biomass, algae and other materials to make biodiesel that are not typically used as feedstocks today," says Andy Andrews of Paratherm, headquartered in Conshohocken, Penn. "Other companies with newly patented processes that revolve around pyrolitic or super-critical methods might need a fluid with higher temperature capabilities for their 'envelope-stretching' applications."READ MORE
