ISA, Decker Truck Line kick off "Million Mile Haul"

By | December 15, 2006
The Iowa Soybean Association (ISA) and Decker Truck Line Inc. have kicked off the "Million Mile Haul." The program is designed to complete a one-of-a-kind, comprehensive fuel impact study that examines the effects of B20 compared with regular petroleum diesel fuel. The study will compare soy biodiesel to regular diesel fuel in a fleet of 10 over-the-road trucks.

The documentation trucking program is the first in the nation to be made public. The objective of this study is for the trucking industry to use the data, and as a result, promote the use of soy biodiesel as an alternative fuel. A fleet of 10 trucks running on B20 and 10 trucks running on regular diesel will each complete 1 million miles in the first year. Caterpillar Inc. will participate in gathering technical information, as well as analytical analysis, with the use of B20 in its engines, which are in Decker trucks.

The ISA, Decker Truck Line, the National Biodiesel Board (NBB), Caterpillar Inc., Iowa Central Community College, Renewable Energy Group and the USDA have partnered to support this study. Rep. Tom Latham, R-Iowa, as well as Iowa state senators, were on hand at the ISA and Decker's announcement.

The ISA, an NBB member, develops policies and programs that help farmers expand profit opportunities while promoting environmentally sensitive production using the soybean checkoff and other resources. The association is governed by an elected volunteer board of 21 farmers.

Decker Truck Line has more than 450 powered units in its refrigerated, protected services, van and flatbed divisions. The company transports food products, dry freight, and steel and building materials throughout the Midwest, Southeast, West and south-central United States, and selected provinces in Canada. The company is based out of Fort Dodge, Iowa.
