US EPA approves new fuel pathway for REG Geismar
The U.S. EPA approved a fuel pathway for the Renewable Energy Group Inc.’s Geismar, Louisiana, biorefinery that will allow the facility to generate D5 advanced biofuel renewable identification numbers (RINs) for naphtha and liquefied petroleum gas (LGP).
The approved pathway applies to naphtha and LGP made from biogenic waste fats, oils and greases (FOGs) feedstocks through a hydrotreating production process.
According to information published by the EPA, the Geismar plant’s hydrotreating process uses grid electricity, natural gas and hydrogen produced from natural gas via steam methane reforming as energy sources.
The EPA’s analysis shows that naphtha produced at the Geismar plant using yellow grease achieves 76.4 percent greenhouse gas (GHG) reduction relative to the fossil fuel baseline. LPG produced from the yellow grease at the facility achieves a 76.3 percent GHG reduction.
