The Santa Pod Raceway in Bedfordshire, England, will host the second annual Alternative Energy Racing event April 24.

Last year during the first race, fossil fuels were not used. Entrants are allowed to race the vehicle of their choice on any alternative fuel that can be produced in a sustainable manner. The fuels include biodiesel, ethanol, biogas, electricity, hydrogen, compressed gas and synthesized fuels.

Each vehicle will race down a one-fourth mile drag strip in an effort to gain the title of Zero Emissions Vehicle or Fastest Alternative Fuel Vehicle.

Last year's alternative fuel class winner was a Triumph Daytona 675, driven by Rupert Paul and Russ Joyner. The vehicle, powered by ethanol, finished in 10.87 seconds.

Driver Dave Jenkins, driving a biodiesel-powered MAN Racing Truck, achieved the quickest biodiesel fueled vehicle time at 14.2 seconds.

Twenty entrants participated in the 2008 race, including a Skoda Fabia VRS utilizing 100 percent vegetable oil and a Volkswagen Beetle powered by ethanol.

The 2009 event is open to companies, individuals, universities, colleges and clubs, and all types of vehicles may be used.
