Global Alternative Fuels LLC in El Paso, Texas, is finalizing the engineering for a $12 million expansion that will increase its 5 MMgy biodiesel plant capacity to 15 MMgy. The company plans to break ground this spring, according to Carlos Guzmán, president and chief operating officer for the Global Alternative Fuels. "Our current infrastructure allows for a fast implementation schedule," Guzmán said. "We're shooting for the end of this year (to complete the expansion.)"

Guzmán said the additional 10 MMgy production capacity is the first phase of a planned two-phased expansion. He said another 10 MMgy capacity will be added later, which will bring the plant up to 25 MMgy. The plant, which started producing biodiesel on Jan. 3, already needs to increase production to serve the market from El Paso west to Phoenix, Ariz., Guzmán said. "We have a buyer for every drop of fuel we make," he added.

The plant uses waterless modular biodiesel processing technology from Greenline Industries. "El Paso is in a desert area, so we chose Greenline's waterless biodiesel platform for our initial plant," Guzmán said. "Once we discovered that 5 million gallons would not be enough to meet demand in our area, we asked Greenline to add another 10 million gallons of capacity."

"It's very exciting to us that Global Alternative Fuels is finding a hot market for biodiesel in the Southwest," said Donn Tice, chief executive officer of Greenline Industries.

Global Alternative Fuels currently processes palm, soybean, cottonseed, and canola oils, along with yellow and brown greases and animal fats to produce biodiesel.
