The winners of the first Sustainable Biofuels Awards were announced March 17 at the World Biofuels Markets conference and exhibition in Brussels, Belgium.
United Kingdom biodiesel producer Argent Energy Ltd. received the sustainable biodiesel award for a distributor or producer and Florida-based PetroAlgae LLC received the sustainable technology supplier award. The sustainable bioethanol award for a distributor or producer went to Swedish firm SEKAB.
"The Sustainable Biofuels Awards have been developed to help promote the considerable benefits of biofuels production and to encourage greater focus on sustainability criteria right throughout the biofuels value chain," said Nadim Chaudhry, Green Power Conferences event director. Green Power Conferences organized the World Biofuels Markets conference held March 16-18 in Brussels.
In its inaugural year, three awards were given out with a shortlist of three per category chosen from nominations and recommendations. The judging panel voted independently on who they felt had provided the greatest sustainability benefits, as measured by greenhouse gas savings, environmental impact and further societal benefits of the operations or technology of the nominees.
In addition to Argent Energy, nominations from the biodiesel industry included Finnish firm Neste Oil Corp. and United Kingdom-based Mabanaft Ltd.
Indian-based Praj Industries Ltd. and China's Institute of New Energy at Tsinghua University were nominated, along with PetroAlgae in the technology provider category.
In addition to SEKAB, nominations from the ethanol industry included Greenergy International and Ineos Bio.
