Ag Solutions closes in onstart-up for first Michigan plant

By | January 01, 2006
At press time, Ag Solutions Inc. was preparing to start operations in January at its Gladstone, Mich., biodiesel plant, according to Ag Solutions owner Richard Vandevusse. Upon commissioning, the plant will continue finalizing work on the tank farm's shelter building, installing the plant's second production module and other remaining items, Vandevusse told Biodiesel Magazine.

Once the plant's two production modules are fully on line-scheduled for March 2006-Ag Solutions will have the capacity to produce 10 MMgy, using soy oil as its initial feedstock. "We would eventually like to run soy oil on one production line and waste grease on the other," Vandevusse said.

Ag Solutions Inc. designed its process technology in-house with its neighboring sister company, VanAire Inc., also owned by Vandevusse. General contracting services were provided internally as well. According to Vandevusse, the plant is using a unique hybrid combination of batch and continuous processing.
With focus on getting the plant up and running, Ag Solutions has yet to finalize a biodiesel marketer. However, Vandevusse has been in discussions with several significant marketing players and will soon strike a deal.

Upon start-up, Ag Solutions will be the first commercial-scale biodiesel plant to operate in the state of Michigan. "We've had a tremendous amount of support and interest," Vandevusse said. "It always surprises me how many biodiesel fans there are out there."

Ag Solutions will be on the hunt for two more plant sites in 2006, according to Vandevusse.
