KiOR begins commercial production of bio-oil in Columbus, Miss.
KiOR Inc. has commenced operations at its commercial-scale facility in Columbus, Miss. The company is now producing bio-oil for use in renewable gasoline and diesel. Through KiOR’s 2012 third quarter review President and CEO Fred Cannon said the bio-oil is in line with specifications needed for upgrading. “More importantly,” he said, “we believe that the high quality of the oil from the Columbus facility validates KiOR’s proprietary biomass fluid catalytic cracking technology at commercial scale. The facility’s performance to date not only meets our expectations based on our experience at our pilot- and demonstration-scale facilities, but also gives me confidence that we remain on track to upgrade our oil in order to ship America’s first truly sustainable cellulosic gasoline and diesel for American vehicles.”
Cannon also said that he believes continued work to improve the catalyst platform used to convert woody biomass and other feedstocks will help the company produce roughly 72 gallons per bone-dry ton of biomass at its commercial facility in Natchez, Miss.
Because the company was working to commission the Columbus facility in third quarter 2012, KiOR did not report any revenue earnings and shares in the company were actually down to 26 cents per share, a 3 cent difference from the second quarter of 2012.
In July, the U.S. EPA granted KiOR fuel registration for its renewable gasoline product and in August, the agency granted the company fuel registration for its renewable diesel.
