78M gallons of US biodiesel produced in Feb., 150M gallons YTD
The U.S. EPA said Friday that 77.6 million gallons of biodiesel was produced in February.
Biodiesel, an EPA-designated advanced biofuel that has exceeded targets under the renewable fuel standard (RFS) for two consecutive years, is reported under the biomass-based diesel category under the RFS. To view the figures, visit the EPA's website here.
The numbers show a total of more than 80.4 million gallons of biomass-based diesel for February, but that total also includes renewable diesel production. With the February numbers, year-to-date biodiesel production stands at just under 150 million gallons.
Made from an increasingly diverse mix of resources such as recycled cooking oil, soybean oil and animal fats, biodiesel is the first and only EPA-designated advanced biofuel that's produced on a commercial scale across the U.S. It is produced in nearly every state in the country and is used in existing diesel engines without modification.
In 2012 the biodiesel industry produced more than 1 billion gallons, supporting more than 60,000 jobs across the country.
