Hanover, New Hampshire-based Dartmouth College has narrowed down potential locations for the Dartmouth Green Energy Project to three options. A final location is expected to be selected by the end of summer.
In January, the university <a href="http://biomassmagazine.com/articles/15885/new-biomass-plant-will-increase-dartmouthundefineds-sustainability">announced it was seeking proposals to build a biomass energy heating facility and transmission system</a> to replace the existing central heating. The project is expected to cost more than $200 million. In addition to converting Dartmouth from fossil fuel-based heat to biomass, the new facility will also transition the university from steam heat to hot-water heat, which is expected to improve heating efficiency by 20 percent.&nbsp;
A <a href="http://biomassmagazine.com/articles/15968/dartmouth-opens-rfq-for-biomass-heating-project" target="_blank">request for qualifications (RFQ) was issued in February</a> seeking credentials from companies interested in bidding on the project.&nbsp;
College officials held a forum May 22 discussing the three potential sites for the new heating plant. All are Dartmouth-owned properties. Public comments regarding the potential sites are being gathered through July. A final site is expected to be selected later this summer.
Dartmouth has announced it will work with a private firm to design, finance, permit, build, operate and maintain the plant. The project is expected to take two years to construct, with operations currently scheduled to begin in 2025.
