Golden Grain Energy begins construction of ethanol plant

October 1, 2003

Between 200 to 250 people attended the groundbreaking ceremony at Golden Grain Energy LLC near Mason City, Iowa, on Oct. 10. The fifth ethanol plant under construction in the state boosts Iowa to the top in U.S. ethanol production capacity.

The 40-mmgy plant will take in 15 million bushels of corn and produce 120,000 tons of dried distillers grains with solubles (DDGS) annually. Iowa has 12 ethanol plants currently on line.

"That's quite a step that Iowa has made in the last few years," Golden Grain Energy President Walter Wendland told EPM. "Outside of ADM (Archer Daniels Midland) and Cargill Dow, we really didn't have any ethanol production in the state three or four years ago."

Bob Dinneen, president of the Renewable Fuels Association, and Sen. Charles Grassley, R-Iowa, were among the speakers at the ceremony. Mason City Mayor Jean Marinos, Mason City Economic Development President Steve Gales and Pam Johnson of the Iowa Corn Promotion Board also participated.

About 500 farmers own shares in Golden Grain Energy, formed in March 2002. The $56.4 million facility will bring 32 new jobs to the area with a $1.7 million annual payroll.

The project should be completed by March 2005. Fagen Inc. will build the plant utilizing an ICM process design.
