Renewable Algal Energy awarded DOE grant

Kingsport, Tenn.-based algal technology company Renewable Algal Energy LLC received $3 million in grant money appropriated under the U.S. DOE's Small Business Innovative Research Phase III Xlerator program for its project titled, "Algal Biodiesel via Innovative Harvesting and Aquaculture Systems."READ MORE

Refining equipment funding available in Ohio

The Advancing Biofuels Beyond the Basics program, run by the Ohio Department of Development, is now accepting applications from biodiesel and ethanol companies seeking funding for refining equipment purchases. With $8 million in available funding initially given to the state-run program through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, each eligible applicant can receive anywhere from $500,000 to $1 million.READ MORE 2011 Biodiesel Industry Directory

Jatoil to increase Indonesian holdings

Jatoil Ltd. announced on Sept. 28 that it is moving into the second stage of development with its joint venture, PT Jatoil Waterland, which will effectively double its jatropha land holdings in the Central Java, Indonesia, to 1,000 hectares (2,471 acres). According to the company, nurseries to grow jatropha seedlings will be established in the coming weeks. It is currently expected that those seedlings will be planted in November.READ MORE

Neste banks on waste-based microbial oil

Neste Oil recently applied for patents covering technology developed to produce microbial oil from waste and residues with help from various yeasts and molds. The oil could then be used as feedstock for the company's NExBTL renewable diesel process. Research work began with the Aalto University School of Science and Technology in late 2007, and since then the process technology challenges have been resolved. Microbial oil produced this way has already been refined into NExBTL renewable diesel.READ MORE

Illinois plant receives loan to rehire workers

Midwest Biodiesel Products LLC received a $300,000 loan from the St. Louis Business Development Fund and St. Louis Private Fund. The company intends to use the loan to rehire laid-off staff at its 12 MMgy multifeedstock plant in South Roxana, Ill., and buy soybean and vegetable oil, according to President Terry Zintel.READ MORE

Many senators will soon hit the campaign trail for fall elections, but before they go the National Biodiesel Board and the Advanced Biofuels Association have joined together to remind them of the importance of extending the biodiesel, renewable diesel and alternative fuels tax credits.READ MORE
