Researchers develop one-step algae harvesting, FAME conversion


Researchers from the University of Texas at Austin have developed a proof-of-concept design to harvest, dewater and convert the dried algae to biodiesel in a one-step process using resins. They detail the process in a recently published paper.

Whole Energy expands Calif. biodiesel offering with REG-9000


Biodiesel is now available via truckload from REG's new biodiesel location in Rancho Dominguez outside of Long Beach. The first truckload was picked up by Whole Energy, a regional distributor and retailer with locations all along the West Coast.

US produced 100M gallons of biodiesel in July, 658M gallons YTD


EPA said Aug. 30 that 100 million gallons of biodiesel were produced in July, reporting year-to-date production of just less than 658 million gallons through the end of the month. Last year the industry set a record with nearly 1.1 billion gallons.

Europe looks into dumped Argentine, Indonesian biodiesel imports


Upon a July 17 complaint lodged by the European Biodiesel Board, the European Commission initiated antidumping proceedings Aug. 29 on imported biodiesel from Argentina and Indonesia. If found to be true, sanctions must be imposed within nine months.

UFOP questions science of recent GHG study on rapeseed biodiesel


Experts from UFOP question the scientific quality of the recent study, "Uncertainties about the GHG Emissions Saving of Rapeseed Biodiesel," which said rapeseed biodiesel doesn't meet the 35 percent threshold of GHG reductions under the EU directive.

Biofuel groups file an intervenors' brief in API lawsuit over RFS


Seven biofuel organizations, including NBB, filed an intervenors' brief Sept. 4 in the American Petroleum Institute case against the U.S. EPA challenging the 2012 cellulosic and advanced biofuel requirements under the renewable fuel standard (RFS).
