US EPA sets biodiesel volume for 2013 at 1.28 billion gallons


After much anticipation, EPA has issued the biomass-based diesel volume requirements under the federal renewable fuel standard for next year at 1.28 billion gallons. The biodiesel industry pushed hard for this increase after a record year in 2011.

Magellan Pipeline adds biodiesel infrastructure to major fuel hub


A new hub of biodiesel distribution is up and running in Des Moines, Iowa, leading to greater consumer access to biodiesel. Magellan Pipeline completed a new biodiesel distribution facility at its largest petroleum distribution terminal in the state.

Utah State team sets new speed record on waste-based biodiesel


A team of faculty and students from Utah State University set a land speed record this month in a student-built car run on biodiesel fuel also produced by the students. The team performed at the World of Speed event at the Bonneville Flats Speedway.

A team of researchers that has been working on getting fuel-grade oil out of algae may be within four years of a near-commercial-scale production level. The team has received a $2 million National Science Foundation grant to help hasten the process.

New Minn. soybean executive director brings biofuels experience


Thomas Slunecka, a biofuels industry veteran, has been chosen to lead the Minnesota Soybean Growers Association and Minnesota Soybean Research & Promotion Council into the future. Previously, Slunecka led EPIC and was an executive with the NCGA.
