Verbio profits on biodiesel exports

German biofuels producer Vereinigte BioEnergie AG (Verbio) reported higher profits during the first nine months of 2008 due to increased biodiesel exports to Eastern Europe. The 16.4 million ($20.8 million) profits were made despite a significant decrease in sales within Germany as a result of increased German taxes on biofuels and financial losses related to ethanol production, the company said.READ MORE

Biobode develops glycerin-to-plastic technology

Ireland-based Biobode Ltd. is developing technology that converts crude glycerin into commodity plastics. According to Chief Executive Officer Scott O'Connor, glycerin accounts for 20 percent to 38 percent of the plastic's volume, measured by weight. Amyris begins pilot-scale renewable diesel plant

Amyris Biotechnologies Inc. has commenced operations at a pilot-scale renewable diesel facility in Emeryville, Calif., as part of its strategy to ultimately commercialize renewable diesel production in Brazil.READ MORE

China Clean Energy resumes biodiesel production

Biodiesel manufacturer and distributor China Clean Energy Inc. resumed production at its facility in the Fujian Province of China on Nov. 10. The company suspended operations in April as a result of increasing costs for raw materials and stagnant diesel pricing.READ MORE

Missouri biodiesel plant up for auction

Great River Soy Processing LLC, a 5 MMgy biodiesel plant in Lilbourn, Mo., will be auctioned Nov. 20. The facility was on line for two weeks in October 2007 before it was shut down due to rising soybean oil prices.READ MORE

Inland Empire Oilseeds begins biodiesel production

Inland Empire Oilseeds LLC, an 8 MMgy biodiesel producer in Odessa, Wash., has begun producing biodiesel from canola. The company will ramp up production with hopes of reaching full capacity within the next few months, according to General Manager Steve Starr.READ MORE

REG receives $740,000 to staff research lab

Renewable Energy Group Inc. has received a $740,000 grant from the Iowa Power Fund to staff a new state-of-the-art biodiesel research and feedstock commercialization lab at its headquarters in Ames, Iowa. According to REG Research Development Manager Glen Meier, the research center will focus on alternative feedstocks, biodiesel moisture capacity, and measurement of soaps and sterol glycosides.READ MORE

EPA publishes manual for biodiesel producers

The U.S. EPA Region 7 Biofuels Work Group has published "Environmental Laws Applicable to Construction and Operation of Biodiesel Production Facilities," a manual that provides information about federal environmental programs, and the roles that federal, state and local agencies play in relation to companies interested in designing, building and operating biodiesel manufacturing facilities. Wastewater permits and spill prevention are among the topics addressed.READ MORE

Air New Zealand, Boeing set test flight date

Air New Zealand Ltd., Boeing Co., Rolls-Royce Motors and UOP LLC have announced that a 747-400 jetliner will leave Auckland, New Zealand, on Dec. 3 with one of its four Rolls-Royce RV211 engines partially powered by fuel derived from jatropha. The blend, to be used in a single engine, will be mixed 50-50 with Jet A1 fuel.READ MORE

Biodiesel-powered jet makes transcontinental flight

Green Flight International successfully completed the world's first transcontinental biodiesel-powered jet flight Nov. 1. The flight began in Reno, Nev., and ended in Leesburg, Fla. According to Douglas Rodante, Green Flight's chief executive officer, 1,776 miles of the flight were flown using B100. The remaining 710 miles were fueled by a mixture containing 50 percent biodiesel and 50 percent jet fuel.READ MORE
