EIA data shows US imports of biomass-based diesel spiked in March


U.S. imports of biomass-based diesel skyrocketed at the end of the first quarter as the nation imported more than eight times the volume in March over February, according to new EIA data. Gross U.S. imports jumped to 17.3 million gallons in March.

Oil-rich yellow-green algae found in Rockies thrives in low temps


A new strain of yellow-green algae, heterococcus sp. DN1, has been discovered in the snow fields of the Rocky Mountains. The alga grows at temps near freezing and accumulates large intracellular stores of lipids. It could be ideal for biodiesel.

United Airlines, AltAir Fuels execute biofuel purchase agreement


AltAir Fuels will retrofit part of an existing petroleum refinery to become a 30 million gallon advanced biofuel facility near Los Angeles, Calif. Beginning in 2014, United Airlines will buy 15 million gallons of biojet over a three-year period.

Europe sets provisional duties on Argentine, Indonesian biodiesel


According to Regulation 490/2013, provisional dumping margins on various Argentine biodiesel exporters range from 6.8 to 10.6 percent. For Indonesian biodiesel exporters, the provisional dumping margins range from zero to 9.6 percent.

60 MMgy Idaho ethanol plant begins distillers corn oil extraction


Pacific Ethanol Inc. has begun commercial production of distillers corn oil at its 60 MMgy ethanol plant in Magic Valley, Idaho. The company is using ICM Inc.'s trademarked Advanced Oil Separation System to extract the oil from the plant's backend.

Gadsden, Ala., switches 146 city diesels to B20 saving $5K a year


The city of Gadsden, Ala., has switched to B20 for many of its garbage trucks, dump trucks, tractors and other heavy equipment. B20 biodiesel currently costs 1 cent less per gallon than straight diesel, saving the city more than $5,000 a year.
