EPA RFS proposal gives biodiesel a modest trajectory of growth


The U.S. EPA finally issued its long-awaited volume proposals for the RFS. The proposal calls for 1.63 billion gallons of biomass-based diesel for 2014, 1.7 billion gallons for 2015, 1.8 billion gallons for 2016 and 1.9 billion gallons for 2017.

Researchers study benefits of double-cropping camelina, soybeans


Russ Gesch, a plant physiologist with the USDA Soil Conservation Research Lab in Morris, Minnesota, found encouraging results when growing Camelina sativa with soybeans in the Midwest. Water use and other attributes of double-cropping were studied.

NORA releases comprehensive biodiesel/Bioheat report


Pursuant to law, Congress requires the National Oilheat Research Alliance to prepare a report on the utilization rate and analysis of the use of biofuels in oilheating equipment. The report, the most comprehensive of its kind, was released in May.

Methes to devote part of biodiesel capacity to other bioproducts


Methes Energies announced it will start offering epoxidized soybean oil (ESO) and natural polyol from its Sombra, Ontario, biodiesel production facility. The company will convert 20 percent of its 13 MMgy capacity to produce ESO and natural polyol.

Renewable share of US energy consumption highest since 1930s


Renewable energy accounted for 9.8 percent of total domestic energy consumption in 2014. This marks the highest renewable energy share since the 1930s, when wood was a much larger contributor to domestic energy supply.
