Draft of US wood chip heating fuel standard available for comment

A committee working on development of a voluntary national wood chip heating fuel technical quality standard for the U.S. has a draft ready for public comment.
The effort, funded by a U.S. Forest Service Wood Education and Resource Center Grant, has been underway for several years. Partners working directly on the initiative include the Biomass Energy Resource Center, Innovative Natural Resource Solutions, the American Society of Agricultural and Biological Engineers, and the Biomass Thermal Energy Council.
The overarching goal of the initiative is standard to improve the performance, efficiency, and reliability of woodchip heating systems and enhance the technical credibility and market confidence that will help expand the woodchip heating market.

In January, the process advisory committee proposed making revisions to the existing international standard ISO 17225-4, rather than develop a new standard for the U.S. market. The committee has been working to engage the entire supply chain of stakeholders, including boiler manufacturers, fuel producers, fuel processors and consumers.
A draft of the proposed revisions is currently available for public comment, in conformance with ANSI accreted standards and procedures. Individuals interested in reviewing the standard should send an email to Jean Walsh at ASABE, requesting a copy of the draft and instructions on how to respond.
