A Florida company is the first in the United States to bring Miscanthus x giganteus transplants commercially available to producers on a large scale. Speedling Inc. of Sun City, Fla., is marketing the dedicated energy crop to producers as a step forward in the process of making cellulosic ethanol a reality.

M. x giganteus is a hybrid plant that is noted for its high yield and climate adaptability, having been utilized as an energy crop in Europe for 15 years.

"We believe the introduction of dedicated energy crops to American agriculture is the single most significant change in decades," said Tom Harrington, Speedling's business development consultant for energy, forage and reclamation crops. "It will benefit farmers and has the potential to make America energy independent."

Speedling is the world's largest producer of vegetative transplants with locations in Florida, Georgia, Texas and California.
