The importance of teamwork

BBI International, conference organizer, publisher of Biodiesel Magazine and my employer, held an all-staff meeting this week from Monday evening through Wednesday afternoon, and it was very productive to let go of the daily responsibilities all of us have so we could get together and work on ourselves, so to speak.

Most BBI employees are concentrated in Grand Forks, N.D., but we have several coworkers based in Colorado who we work with on a daily or weekly basis but seldom get to see. It is easy to get wrapped up in day-to-day items of our own, so the spending of quality time with others in the organization-from the conference planners who organize our renewable fuels and biomass events throughout the year, to the accountants who crunch the numbers and pay the bills, to the writers, editors and designers who take the publications from concept to reality-was worth "getting behind" in normal work to appreciate those in our company who are vital to operations.

If your company hasn't had a staff retreat in a while due to the economy or other reasons, just remember that there is great value that can come of those once- or twice-a-year group hugs-value that far outweighs the cost of the occasion.
