Syngenta Biotechnology Inc. and Verdezyne Inc., formerly CODA Genomics Inc., announced Feb. 9 the signing of a research and development agreement. Syngenta Biotechnology is a leading seed company and crop breeder based in Research Triangle Park, N.C.

Under the agreement, Verdezyne will use its unique technology platform to synthesize novel genes that will be tested for optimized expression of enzymes in plants by Syngenta. Through the use of its advanced computational algorithms, Verdezyne will design and synthesize novel gene libraries for engineering proteins, metabolic pathways and microorganisms to manufacture platform chemicals and biofuels.

No financial details on the arrangement were available.

"We are enthusiastic about applying Verdezyne's technology platform for a leading agribusiness company," said E. William Radany, president and chief executive officer of Verdezyne. "This relationship is yet another example of the unique power of Verdezyne's core technology to optimize the expression of key enzymes for the biotechnology marketplace."
