Three biodiesel facilities earn highest quality production mark
October 13, 2006
One of the nation's first biodiesel suppliers has become the latest company to embrace BQ-9000, a voluntary quality control program. World Energy recently earned the distinction of accredited producer. Recent U.S. biodiesel industry newcomer Cargill Inc. and Griffin Industries have also become accredited. To date, 12 companies are BQ-9000 accredited, with another six undergoing the process.
"We are pleased to have our longstanding commitment to high quality affirmed by BQ-9000 accreditation," said Gene Gebolys, CEO of World Energy and chairman of the National Biodiesel Board's (NBB) regulatory committee.
Cargill took measures while constructing its biodiesel facilities to ensure it meets the industry standard for quality. Cargill's Iowa Falls, Iowa, location has produced biodiesel since May. The company reports 37.5 million gallons of capacity.
"We have been able to leverage our global processing and systems knowledge in our Iowa Falls biodiesel facility, ensuring that Cargill customers consistently receive biodiesel that meets ASTM D 6751 specifications," Superintendent Dan Schoenfelder said.
Griffin Industries looks at the program as a way for its consumers to rest assured. "Our ability to further validate the consistent quality of Griffin's BioG-3000 premium biodiesel is a critical step to maintaining and building consumer confidence," said Senior Vice President Tom Griffin.
BQ-9000 is a quality assurance certification program that includes procedures for fuel production, storage, handling and management aimed at ensuring fuel quality throughout production and distribution. There are two categories: certified marketer and accredited producer. Both the NBB and the Canadian Renewable Fuels Association have adopted the program. To date, two companies are certified marketers.
World Energy is headquartered in Chelsea, Mass., with additional sales offices in Georgia, Ohio and Antwerp, Belgium. Its biodiesel plant is in Lakeland, Fla. Cargill is an international provider of food, agricultural and risk management products and services. Griffin is a recycler of agricultural by-products and is located in Cold Spring, Ky. All three companies are members of the NBB.
