DuPont, Bunge announce soy collaboration to include biodiesel
November 10, 2006
DuPont piqued the biodiesel industry's interest when it announced expanded sustainability commitments. The company recently announced it will develop biodiesel through a partnership with Bunge North America.
Althought the partnership may have caused some buzz in the industry, the two companies aren't strangers. In 2003, they formed the Bunge DuPont Biotech Alliance, through which the companies have collaborated on soy food and nutrition products. The collaboration will now be expanded to include industrial applications, biofuels, feed and other opportunities.
"We are excited about the potential of new soy products that will build on this success in the food sector, and enable us to better serve feed and industrial customers, including the growing soy biodiesel industry," said Carl Hausmann, president and CEO of Bunge North America.
A DuPont statement noted that increased biodiesel production results in increased soybean meal availability, highlighting the importance of enhancing the quality of soybean meal. Therefore, DuPont said researchers at its subsidiary Pioneer Hi-Bred International Inc. are developing soybean varieties that produce soybean meal with enhanced amino acid content.
Pioneer is identifying the oil content of its soybean varieties to determine the impact on biodiesel production. "Pioneer supports the expansion of the biodiesel market as a way to enhance grower income and reduce reliance on foreign energy sources," said Dean Oestreich, DuPont vice president and Pioneer general manager. "That's why we've invested the time and effort to characterize the oil content of our soybeans and other crops, and are now aggressively communicating that information to growers and the industry."
