New device measures biodiesel stability

Metrohm Ion Analysis has introduced a new version of its Rancimat instrument to measure oxidative stability in biodiesel. The Rancimat 873 is designed specifically for the biofuels market. It passes a stream of air through a sample in a sealed and heated reaction chamber. These conditions accelerate the oxidation of fatty acid methyl esters. As the esters decompose, volatile compounds are formed that are carried by the air stream to a second vessel containing distilled water. Organic acids in the air stream can be detected by an increase in water conductivity, which will increase over time. Metrohm said it has proven this method can be used to measure the oxidative stability of biodiesel. The unit's software allows administrative log-in functions with access for groups of users and individuals. The software parameters are now specific to biodiesel and diesel analysis.
