Challenge X projects favor biodiesel

March 1, 2005

Out of the 17 North American universities that are participating in General Motors' (GM) Challenge X: Crossover to Sustainable Mobility in 2005, 12 of the projects will use biodiesel as its preferred fuel, according to Bob Larsen, director of the Center for Transportation Research Energy Systems Division.

Competing Challenge X schools design vehicle solutions that will minimize energy consumption and reduce emissions in a three-year process that started in fall 2004. The first year will focus on research and vehicle design. Once a team's design is selected and approved, the team can obtain hardware, develop software, perform subsystem testing and design a plan to integrate their design into a GM-provided Chevrolet Equinox. The second year will involve integration, powertrain development and demonstration of energy use and emissions goals, while the third year allows for further refinement of the vehicle. Teams will be judged on their execution, progress toward meeting Challenge X goals and the ability to predict their performance using math-based tools.

Michigan Technical University, University of Akron, Pennsylvania State University, University of Michigan, University of Tennessee, Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology, West Virginia University, University of Tulsa, San Diego State University, Mississippi State University, Ohio State University and University of Wisconsin-Madison listed biodiesel as their primary fuel in initial student vehicle architecture selections, gathered Jan. 27.
