Round robin test for pharmaceutical glycerol finds curious result

June 20, 2017

Twelve laboratories from Austria, Belgium, Germany and the Netherlands participated in the now-complete second round robin test for pharmaceutical glycerol, organized by the German biodiesel quality management association (AGQM). The results showed that standard methods from the fuel sector showed better precision than those from the European Pharmacopeia.

“The methods from the European Pharmacopeia for analytics of glycerol include vague descriptions and offer room for interpretation,” AGQM stated. “Additionally, usually there are no precision details given. The first round robin test in 2015 showed a bad precision for some of the methods from the European Pharmacopeia.” As a result, the European Pharmacopeia methods were complemented by, or exchanged with, standard methods from the fuel sector in the second test round.

“Fortunately, these new methods achieved a much better result,” AGQM stated, adding that the data obtained from the round robin test can be the basis for a revision of the European Pharmacopeia methods.

A third round robin test is planned for this fall. Interested laboratories are invited to participate. Click here for more information.
