AGQM launches 1st no-harm test for biodiesel cold flow improvers

Germany’s biodiesel quality management association (AGQM) has launched a new no-harm test for cold flow improvers for use in biodiesel as a blend component in fuel.

In cooperation with the petroleum oil and additive industries, AGQM has developed a test procedure to ensure no negative interactions between blended biodiesel, diesel fuel and cold flow improvers.

The new no-harm test for cold flow improvers consists of two test parts: determining minimum requirements such as lowering the cold filter plugging point (CFPP), ash content, flashpoint, total contamination and interaction tests with other cold flow improvers in B100; and tests in a B10 fuel specially developed for the no-harm test. According to AGQM, the test fuel will already contain high levels of diesel cold flow improvers and antisettling agents in order for the additive in question to be tested in a worst-case scenario regarding filterability, engine oil compatibility, corrosion, foam and emulsion formation, and an XUD9 engine test. This also ensures comparability between future and current no-harm tests.

If a cold flow improver additive meets all the requirements, it will be added to the new no-harm list, which will be publicly available on the AGQM website.
