Terra Bioenergy LLC held a groundbreaking ceremony on July 17 designating the beginning of construction on a new biodiesel plant in Saint Joseph, Mo. Initially, the facility will produce 15 MMgy, but the company hopes to expand to its full capacity of 30 MMgy as profitability and the market allow.
"Our plant is designed to use a wide range of materials including animal fat as well as soy type feed stock," said David Holcombe, chief executive officer of Terra Bioenergy. "The ratio will be determined by economic conditions and profit margins."
Holcombe said the company doesn't feel financially "stressed" over current economic conditions. "The flexibility designed in our processing system allows us a competitive advantage," he said.
Although early site preparation began in June, bad weather conditions have slowed construction. The plant, which is scheduled for production by late February 2009, will employ 25 to 30 people.
