Natural Innovative Renewable Energy of Breda, Iowa, plans to build a 60 MMgy biodiesel plant in the Roth Industrial Park in South Sioux City, Neb. The plant will be capable of producing biodiesel from multiple feedstocks, but the company plans to begin biodiesel production using beef tallow provided by Beef Products Inc., a local meat processor.
According to Natural Innovative Renewable Energy spokesperson Jim Venner, the company also anticipates producing 55 million pounds of glycerin per year to be marketed and sold to the cosmetic and pharmaceutical industry. The plant is expected to bring 36 new jobs to South Sioux City.
Venner said the decision to use beef tallow as a feedstock was necessary given the high price of soybeans. "Soybean prices have really stressed the biodiesel industry," he said. "Animal fat is our alternative choice."
Venner said Natural Innovative Renewable Energy plans to break ground as soon as possible. The plant is expected to be completed within 18 months of groundbreaking.
