Evonik Degussa Corp., a North American affiliate of Germany-based Evonik Degussa GmbH, is expected to break ground this week on its alkoxides production facility in Mobile, Ala. The plant will provide alkoxides as catalysts in the production of biodiesel for Evonik Industries' North American and South American markets.
Evonik Degussa GmbH is a global market leader in specialty chemicals and is a wholly owned subsidiary of Evonik Industries.
"The new sodium methylate solution production facility fits well into the existing infrastructure of Evonik's Mobile, Ala., facility, which is the company's largest site outside Germany," said Brian J. O'Sullivan, business manager EL & MO/Industrial Chemicals. "The new facility will leverage the cost and quality advantages of our Mobile site and support the development of a world class biodiesel industry in the United States for the benefit of consumers faced with high fossil fuel prices."
Evonik said they remain diligent in looking for ways to produce forms of energy from renewable raw materials. "One of the numerous advantages of our catalyst is that it offers customers the benefit of consistently high yields and the high purity of the crude glycerol obtained as a byproduct," O'Sullivan said.
