Irish company converts glycerin into plastic

January 1, 2009

Ireland-based BioBode Ltd. is working to develop a technology that converts crude glycerin into commodity plastics. When measured by weight, glycerin accounts for 20 percent to 38 percent of the plastic's volume. The remainder of the material is made from low-cost commodity chemicals. BioBode is currently working on a bench-scale project that would produce 1 kilogram (2.2 pounds) of plastics. It intends to be producing plastics on a pilot scale within 18 months. The company is currently seeking partners to further develop and commercialize the technology.
