On Jan. 13, the Austrian Biofuels Institute released a list of 13 approved stabilizers for biodiesel. The list was prepared by the German biodiesel quality management working group AGQM e.V., which spent the last year evaluating biodiesel additives.

AGQM evaluated a number of relatively new oxidation stabilizers, alongside the well known BHT for compliance with "no-harm" criteria. The mineral oil industry and the AGQM agreed on the methods for the tests, which included compliance with European quality requirements, filtration and engine compatibility.

Products passing the tests were published in the list, maintained by AGQM as an open list where interested additive suppliers can file an application for testing at any time.

The companies and product brand names included: BASF SE (Kerobit 2637), Chimec SpA (Chimec CH4636, RS76HFP), Ciba Corp. (IRGASTAB BD100 and BD50), Infineum UK Ltd. (Infineum R120 and R130), Innospec Ltd. (BioStable 403E), International Fuel Technology (Diesolift BD-3), Kemin (BF320R), Lanxess Deutschland GmbH (Baynox plus), Eastman Chemical Deutschland GmbH (BioExtend 30 HP), Raschig GmbH (Ionol FB200).

The relative efficiencies in comparison with BHT were also studied, and can be disclosed with the approval of the respective companies, AGQM said.

The final project report and test procedures are available at cost from the AGQM Web site.
