The National Biodiesel Conference and Expo, which is hosted by the National Biodiesel Board, will be held at the Moscone Center West in San Francisco on Feb. 1-4, and for the first time in the event's history, members of the public can attend part of the conference.
The conference's theme is Leading Change Now. It will offer a mix of educational and networking opportunities designed to inform and educate attendees on the latest advancements in the industry and share best practices. Educational sessions focus on sustainability, fuel production, technical updates, fuel distribution, policy/regulations and markets and users.
Community members will be granted free admission to the conference Feb. 4. "San Francisco is a city that has shown a lot of support for biodiesel," said Jenna Higgins, the NBB's director of communications. "We thought this was a good way to involve a lot of biodiesel supporters who otherwise might not be able to attend the conference. We thought it would be a nice thing to do to give something back to the people who have made biodiesel so successful in San Francisco."
Members of the public wishing to attend the conference Feb. 4 don't need to pre-register. Registration will be completed on-site. Higgins recommends interested individuals arrive at the convention center by 8:30 a.m.
The general session on Feb. 4 will feature skippers Pete Bethune and Bryan Peterson. Bethune's biodiesel-powered speedboat, Earthrace, shattered the world record for circumnavigating the globe in 2008. Peterson traveled the world in Sunrider, an inflatable boat, in 1994. Both Bethune and Peterson will share adventures they each faced during their missions to promote biodiesel.
Attendees can also attend one of five educational sessions that day. These sessions include:
- Sustainable Biodiesel Production Strategies
- Biodiesel and Engine Oil
- Improving Biodiesel Performance through Fuel Additive Application
- Implementation of the Renewable Fuels Standard (RFS2)
- Carbon: Cap it, Capture it, or Trade it?
