Germany adopts B7 standard

The standards are in place for B7 to be commercially launched in Germany, according to the Berlin-based oilseed and biofuel promotional group, UFOP (Union zur Forderung von Oel und Proteinpflanzen e.V.). During the Jan. 30 announcement, UFOP said the new fuel will be identified by the DIN 51628 label at the fuel dispenser.
The new standards boost the allowable blend in the German market from a 5 percent to 7 percent blend by volume of biodiesel in diesel fuel. The UFOP estimated the change could increase the potential sales volume of biodiesel from 1.5 million metric tons to 2.1 million metric tons (450 million gallons to 630 million gallons). According to UFOP representative Dieter Bockey, the market launch of B7 should revive the slack demand for rapeseed oil in Germany. The organization also calls for the new standard to be speedily adopted across the European Union.
In anticipation of the new standard, the German biodiesel quality management working group AGQU e.V. released a list of approved additives that have been tested to verify no harm would be encountered using the additives at the higher blends.
