State and local governments in Illinois will be boosting their biodiesel use as the result of legislation recently signed into law by Gov. Pat Quinn. The new law increases the biodiesel blend required for use by diesel-powered vehicles owned by the state or local governments when refueling at a bulk central fueling facility from two percent to five percent.
The Illinois Soybean Association applauded the legislative leaders who supported the pro-biodiesel legislation. "Illinois is a model for how states can stimulate their economies by opening doors for greater biodiesel use and production," said Ron Moore, chairperson.
Illinois passed an incentive in 2003 that provides a partial sales tax exemption of 20 percent on biodiesel blends from B1 to B10. Blends above B10 receive a total exemption from the state sales tax of 6.25 percent, effectively creating an Illinois-specific market for B11. Generally, diesel sales in Illinois total about 1.5 billion gallons per year.
