Normalab updating FBT device to include cold soak

France's Normalab Analis company is currently working "to enhance the ASTM D2068 device to integrate a cold soak filter blocking tendency coefficient" for various types of petrochemical products, including biodiesel, Nicolas Barbay, research and development engineer for Normalab, told Biodiesel Magazine. "We are designing this new machine that is quite new in the petrochemical industry," he said.
D2068 "is a test method intended for use in evaluating distillate fuel cleanliness in those applications that demand a high throughput per installed filter," ASTM said. "Causes of poor filterability might include fuel degradation products, contaminants picked up during storage or transfer, or interaction of the fuel with the filter media."
Normalab currently markets an automatic portable testing machine that generates a printed flow curve that correlates to the FBT characteristics of the fuel being tested. "We are also designing new webbing programs for filters," Barbay said, adding that new filters-as well as testing methods and fuel production practices-will be very important to alleviate future plugging problems.
Normalab, headquartered in Lintot, France, says that with more than 10 test methods available, Normalab provides the widest offering of testing equipment to evaluate the physical properties of biodiesel.
