Biodiesel pumps spread across North America

By | May 01, 2004
Three U.S. states and one Canadian province have installed biodiesel pumps since the last issue of Biodiesel Magazine went to print. Here's the latest update:

Following Topia Energy Inc.'s first biodiesel retail pump opening in Unionville, Ontario, in March, the Ottawa-based company opened two more B20 biodiesel pumps in Toronto. The ribbon cutting was held on May 13. Producers of "Go Further," a new film chronicling actor Woody Harrelson's journey down the Californian coast in a biodiesel-fueled bus, attended the ceremony along with various Toronto businesses, such as Toronto Hydro, Hempola Valley Farms and Motomedia.

According to Govindh Jayaraman, president of Topia Energy, biodiesel fuel is so popular in Unionville that sales have increased by 600 percent since March. Jayaraman expects similar sales at the Toronto outlet.

In the U.S.
In Colorado, Blue Sun Biodiesel opened 10 biodiesel stations simultaneously in May. A ribbon-cutting ceremony was held in Denver at Offen Petroleum Inc., which will be the largest biodiesel-exclusive station in the country. Denver Mayor John Hickenlooper and Blue Sun Biodiesel President and CEO Jeff Probst attended the ceremony, along with Offen Petroleum, Blue Sun Retail Network, and automobile and OEM representatives. All 10 stations will sell B20 blends.

New Hampshire retailer Rymes Propane and Oils opened biodiesel pumps at five stations in early April, according to The Associated Press. New Hampshire air quality engineer Becky Ohler said companies and municipalities are consistently calling to inquire about biodiesel, despite the B20 blend costing up to 30 cents more than regular diesel.

In Georgia, a family-owned fuel distribution company is providing biodiesel to its customers after Davis Oil Co.'s manager of alternative fuels attended the National Biodiesel Conference in Palm Springs, Calif. The company now supplies biodiesel to Massachusetts-based World Energy Alternatives LLC and Robins Air Force Base. It is also considering opening a retail outlet.
